Attorney Barton Morris - Criminal Defense & Rights Restoration

He has spent 25 years in Michigan state and federal courts, and his firm has been working on federal restoration since before the rule was published.

For roughly thirty years, 18 U.S.C. 925(c) sat unfunded. The statute said applications could be made. Congress refused to pay anyone to review them. The practical answer to nearly everyone who asked was that nothing could be done.

His firm did not accept that as the end of the conversation.

The firm brought suits against the Department of Justice regarding its clients' rights, leading to an early application date before the first 5,000 applicants.

The firm is currently preparing applications for the initial window and guiding clients on their path towards clemency and rights restoration.

He has been asked to explain the new rule on:

He is not the only voice in the room.

A federal restoration application is not a legal document with a signature. It is a file, and the strongest parts of that file are usually written by someone other than the lawyer. A licensed psychiatrist who performs risk assessments. A certified substance abuse evaluator. Reviewers read those reports closely, and a report that misses what the process is actually looking for can undo everything around it.

You will hear from those professionals directly about what they look for, what they write, and what makes a report hold up.

Additional speakers to be announced.

Frequently Asked Questions

K
L
Is this a sales pitch?

No, this day is built to give you the confidence to file on your own.

K
L
Will I find out if I qualify?

You will learn how eligibility works and what the rule covers, in detail.

You will not get a determination about your own case. That requires someone looking at your actual record, and it is not something anyone can responsibly do from a stage. Attending does not create an attorney-client relationship.

K
L
I already cleared my record in state court and still got denied. Is this for me?

Yes, and that situation gets its own attention.

State relief settles state status. Federal law keeps its own list, and state relief does not remove anyone from it. Nothing went wrong with your paperwork. They are two separate systems, and how they interact is one of the things October 10 covers.

K
L
What if I go and find out I am not eligible?

You will understand the future choices you can make to become a better applicant.

You will also understand what the process examines, which matters if your circumstances change.

$99. One day. A real path back to your rights.
